By Ciara Burke
I did consider that making your first post on a blog you actually want to “be something” is an important thing. Something which requires time, consideration, the excessively liberal use of Wikipedia and the occasional reference to some underbelly French feminist that at least on paper sums up what we’re trying to do here. I fathomed, for the two to three moments in which I did in fact consider thinking about it, that I may begin with a quote…
In a way then, this post is an exercise in the failure of follow through because its, categorically, none of those things. I did not resort to Wikipedia, I will not quote Hélène Cixous. Instead in the flighty and third-party-inspired fashion that I hope will become characteristic of my contributions to this website, I give you a Bad Salad period mix, italicised and emboldened for dramatic effect.
Because, if you’re like me and spend approximately 96 – 120 hours of every month questioning the design of the human body with your face stuffed in a tub of popcorn and a regrettable glossy filth rag (Glamour is my poison of choice) then you kind of need stuff like this to get you through. These eight songs are my contribution to you, reader. Songs about bleeding, songs about crying, songs about loving yourself, songs about loving yourself and generally songs to make you feel better.
Sleater Kinney – Little Mouth
This is honesty the best version of this song I could find for free. And oh, oh, oh, it is worth so much more than money. Mostly included here for the DAMN WONDERFUL use of the line, “I’m your little mouth”. I mean. Am I right?
Emmy the Great – A Bowl Collecting Blood
This song is not related to the monthly flow in any way. I’m not Emma Lee Moss but I’m pretty sure this is a fact. It may be about love, it may be about growing up, it may be about one of the other four things all songs are about. The fact is, this song is called “A Bowl Collecting Blood” and I did not earn my ‘Captain Obvious’ title by sitting on euphemisms like a miser. This is for all my sisters with a mooncup!
Another Sunny Day – You Should All Be Murdered
Weltschmerz
Guided by Voices – Hot Freaks
Obligatory Guided by Voices song, extra points for taking him to the verse that will always make me squirm “I walked into the house of miraculous recovery / and stood before king everything / and he asked me to join him in the red wing / took me to pie land / said, “I’m a thigh man” / I will be eternally hateful”. I see, yes you can.
Sophie Ellis Bextor – Murder on the Dancefloor
Sometimes when I’m in the bloom of life, all I want to do is dance and slap people. This really gets the job done for both.
Chet Baker – My Funny Valventine
This is a really, really weird song. I was talking to a friend the other day about how strange this song is. I can never put my finger on quite why that is; the melody is like nothing else I’ve ever heard and even the title sort of tells you you’re getting something that you will never know how to tap your toe to. Dropping your womb lining and crying for three days a month is also pretty weird.
El Perro Del Mar – Party
This song is just so lovely and very painful and all of the other things that make it poignantly placed on this list. I can’t contest for this being a wonderful album or artists because I only know this one song. It was on a mix cd I recieved once myself and I have never delved much further into an occasional play of some other album tracks. But this song. Oh, this song.
Au Pairs – Sex Without Stress
Well. You know what ‘m saying. Take my advice.
Thanks for reading guys, I would love to hear some of yours. Feel free to email us your own mixes and we’ll pop them up here for everyone.
